Shipping & Roasting

How fast do you ship?

We roast throughout the week in small batches. Your coffee is packaged and shipped when you order it, and most coffee orders leave the roastery within 3 to 5 business days.

How can I track my order?

Use the tracking link in your shipping confirmation email, or use the chat on our site to check your order status and track your package.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is $5.00 for the first item, plus $1.50 for each additional item, capped at 6 items per order. Crew Members (subscribers) get half-price shipping on every order.

Where do you ship?

We currently ship anywhere in the United States.

What is the Crew Membership?

Subscribe to your favorite coffee and become a member of the Crew. You will get half-price shipping on every order, save on every shipment, and never run out of coffee. Cancel anytime, no commitment. Learn more about the Crew.

How do I cancel, pause, or skip a shipment?

Log into your Salty Sailor account, go to Subscriptions, and you can pause, skip, swap, change your shipping address, or cancel any time before your next shipment processes.

Can I change which coffee I am getting?

Yes. Swap blends or sizes any time from your account, no questions asked.

Discounts

Do you offer a military or first responder discount?

Yes. We offer a 10% discount to active duty military, veterans, and first responders through our partnership with GovX. It works on one-time orders and on subscriptions, and on a subscription it stacks with your Subscribe and Save price on every renewal. Verify your service through GovX to claim it.

Can I stack discounts?

One code per order, but the GovX military and first responder discount is built to work with your subscription, not instead of it. It stacks with the Subscribe and Save price and applies to every renewal, which makes a verified military subscription the best recurring price in the store.

Charity & Giving Back

How much do you donate?

5% of every order supports military families through the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS). Our SS John W Brown collection coffees and LiberTea blends donate 10% to Project Liberty Ship, which preserves the historic SS John W Brown, the last fully restored Liberty ship from WWII.

Do you support coffee farmers directly?

Yes. Each quarter we make micro-loans to coffee farmers through Kiva.org, funding sustainable growing. Read about our Loans That Lift program.

How fresh is your coffee?

We roast throughout the week in small batches. Coffee is packaged and shipped when you order it, so it moves from our weekly roast schedule to your mug without sitting around in a warehouse.

How should I store my coffee?

Keep it in a cool, dry place in an airtight container. Avoid the fridge. Whole bean stays freshest longest, grind right before brewing if you can.

Can I get whole bean or ground?

Both. Choose your grind on the product page when you order.

Returns & Issues

What if my coffee arrives damaged or wrong?

Contact us within 7 days with your order number. We will evaluate the issue and make it right.

Do you accept returns on opened bags?

For quality reasons we cannot accept returns on opened coffee. If something is wrong with your order, reach out and we will fix it.

The honest answer

Why does this cost more than the coffee at the grocery store?

Because it is a different product, bought a different way. Supermarket coffee is a commodity: graded by the sack, blended for consistency, roasted months before you open it. Specialty coffee is bought by the lot, from a named farm or cooperative, picked selectively, and roasted in small batches to a profile that suits that particular harvest.

  • It is picked, not stripped. Cherries ripen at different times on the same branch, so a specialty lot gets picked over repeatedly by hand instead of stripped once.
  • It is graded, and most of it does not make the cut. Defects get sorted out. What is left is a smaller yield from the same amount of work.
  • Processing is a choice, not a default. Washed, natural, honey, wet-hulled: each takes different time, labor and infrastructure, and each changes how the cup tastes.
  • It is roasted to order, in small batches. Not roasted to a warehouse schedule and left to go stale on a shelf.
  • The farmer is paid more. Paying above the commodity price is the entire reason a farm can afford to do all of the above.
